I was reminded of this for some reason today.

I read this years ago – I must have been around fourteen or fifteen at the time – and in a manner characteristic to me till this day, I didn’t bother to check who the author was.

Now I know that it was Émile Zola thanks to Google.  And you can read the text for free thanks to Project Gutenburg.
